Torres del Paine weather in short
Weather in the park changes fast. A clear morning can turn into rain, hard wind or snow by the afternoon, and gusts at the Valle del Francés can be dangerous. Plan every day with a margin and be ready to turn back.
The monthly figures below were measured in the year 2025 at the Chilean weather service station Teniente Gallardo at Puerto Natales airport, 69 m above sea level. They show what one year looked like in town. They are not long-term normals, they are not a forecast for 2026/27, and they were not taken in the mountains, at Lago Grey or at John Gardner Pass. Conditions there can differ from the town.
If you plan boat trips or a long day on the road, see the Grey Glacier boat trips and the Torres del Paine day tours. Both can change with the wind.

Highs and lows are monthly averages of the daily extremes, not record values, and precipitation is the monthly total. In 2025 the highest mean highs came in January and February, and April had the lowest total at 18.1 mm. One year does not make a rule, so do not read it as a typical pattern. For most visitors, the summer season from October to April is the easier one to plan, with longer park hours and boat trips running, and a jacket for rain and wind in every month.

Wind, rain and sudden changes
What the weather means on the ground.
Rapid changes
Weather can shift between rain, wind and snow in a short time. Carry waterproofs, a warm layer, a hat and gloves even on a sunny day.
Gusts at the Valle del Francés
Gusts in the valley can be dangerous. The upper part of the trail is steep and stony, and walkers should turn back when they are tired, when visibility is poor or when gusts become risky.
Valle del Francés guide →Rangers and closures
Follow ranger instructions and closing times. Rangers may limit access on a trail when the weather requires it.
Rivers
Do not cross swollen rivers on impulse. Use the official trails and bridges.
Boats and wind
Boat trips on Lago Grey and Lago Pehoé can be cancelled because of the weather. Keep a spare day if you can, and leave margin before a bus or flight.
Lago Pehoé guide →Winter rules and snow limits
The winter regulation changes how you can walk.
The winter regulation runs from 1 May to 30 August as a reference period, and the park announced an earlier start of 27 April 2026. In winter conditions a specialized guide is required, and the W Trek was set to close in June and July 2026. Do not plan a free solo walk in winter without checking the current rules.
At the Valle del Francés, more than 25 cm of snow at Italiano or 30 cm at Mirador Francés counts as unsafe, and walkers should not continue to Mirador Británico. The guide requirement for the W and Base Las Torres ends on 16 September, with microspikes and poles still required. Do not rely on a fixed yearly date. Check the current rules before you go.
Open fires are banned in the park. Forest fires in 2005 and 2011 caused damage, and the forest has been regrowing since. Private drone flights are banned, and swimming in lakes and rivers is not allowed.

Torres del Paine weather: frequently asked questions
What is the weather like in Torres del Paine?
It changes fast. Rain, wind and snow can follow each other in one day, and gusts at the Valle del Francés can be dangerous. The 2025 measurements at Puerto Natales show highs from 4.6 °C in July to 18.5 °C in January.
Are the monthly figures long-term averages?
No. They were measured in the year 2025 at Puerto Natales airport. They show one year in town, not a long-term normal and not a forecast.
Is it colder in the mountains than in Puerto Natales?
The station is in town, 69 m above sea level, so its figures do not describe Lago Grey or John Gardner Pass. Conditions there can differ, so pack for rain, wind and cold.
Can I hike the W Trek in winter?
Only under the winter regulation, which requires a specialized guide. The W Trek was set to close in June and July 2026. Check the current rules before you plan.
How much snow stops the Valle del Francés trail?
More than 25 cm of snow at Italiano or 30 cm at Mirador Francés counts as unsafe, and walkers should not go on to Mirador Británico.
Is this website the official weather or park source?
No. This is an independent travel guide. For a forecast and current trail status, check the weather service and the park administration before you go.
