The French Valley at a glance

The French Valley, or Valle del Francés, is the middle arm of the W Trek. It climbs between the Paine Grande massif and the Cuernos and ends at two viewpoints: Mirador Francés and, further up, Mirador Británico. Near the valley you see the glacier on Paine Grande hanging above the slopes.

Most people walk the valley as one leg of the W, which takes 3 to 5 days and has Grey, the French Valley and Base Las Torres as its three goals. A road-based Torres del Paine day tour does not include the walk to Británico, so for this valley you need time on foot and, usually, a night in the park. The full route is explained on the W Trek page.

Mirador Francés and Mirador Británico

Two viewpoints in one valley, one easier and one much harder.

Mirador Francés

This is the first viewpoint in the valley and the one most hikers reach. The winter rules name it as a snow checkpoint, so see the weather section below if you travel in the cold months.

Mirador Británico

The second viewpoint sits higher up the valley. The upper section is steep and stony. Turn around if you are exhausted, if visibility is poor or if the gusts become dangerous. A view is never worth a risky climb.

Reference time for the afternoon

A summer reference time for the Italiano to Británico stretch is 15:00. It is a reference, not a promise, and rangers can restrict the stretch depending on the weather. Ask at the ranger station before you start.

Registration

Report your arrival at every ranger station along the way. Follow the rangers' instructions and use only the official trails.

Stage times in the French Valley

Values for single stages, 2026 season.

StageDistanceTimeNote
Paine Grande to Italiano7.5 km2.5 hoursItaliano is a ranger station
Italiano to Mirador Británico5.4 km3 hoursUpper part steep and stony

These are stage values, not the total of a return walk. They do not add up to a day hike from Pudeto, so count the walk back separately. For most W trekkers, the valley works best as its own day with an early start, after a night at Paine Grande or in the valley.

Mirador Cuernos is a different place

Mirador Cuernos is a separate viewpoint reached from Pudeto. It is not a station beyond Británico and not part of the French Valley trail. The Cuernos del Paine are in view from the valley side, but the viewpoint with their name is somewhere else.

Mirador Cuernos and Salto Grande are reached from Pudeto without a catamaran ticket. The park ticket still applies. If you want the lake, the boat and the waterfall in one plan, read the Lago Pehoé page.

Wind, snow and the winter rules

The valley is exposed, and the weather changes quickly.

Gusts

The weather can switch between rain, wind and snow within hours. Gusts in the French Valley can be dangerous, especially higher up. Dress in layers and be ready to turn back.

Snow limits

The winter regulations call conditions unsafe when more than 25 cm of snow lies at Italiano or more than 30 cm at Mirador Francés. In that case they advise not to continue to Británico.

Winter regulations

In winter the park applies its own regulation: a guide is required, and the W was temporarily closed in June and July 2026. Do not plan on walking the W unguided all year.

Park rules on the way

No open fires, no swimming in lakes and rivers, and no private drones. Do not cross swollen rivers without thinking, and leave wildlife alone.

Where to sleep for the valley

Tickets and nights are two separate bookings.

Nights in the mountain refugios and campsites on the W must be reserved, and without a reservation you do not get into that part of the park. The park ticket alone does not cover a night. There is a campsite in the valley itself, Camping Francés, and the refugio at Paine Grande is the usual base on the lake side. Prices and operators are on the refugios and camping page. The ticket (a day pass or a multi-day pass for 2 to 10 consecutive days) is covered on the entrance fee page.

French Valley: frequently asked questions

How long does the French Valley hike take?

The stage values are 7.5 km and about 2.5 hours from Paine Grande to Italiano, then 5.4 km and about 3 hours from Italiano to Mirador Británico. These are one-way stage values, so count the way back on top.

Do I need a separate ticket for the valley?

The valley is part of the park, so the park ticket applies. Mountain nights on the W need a reservation made in advance.

Is Mirador Cuernos at the end of the French Valley?

No. Mirador Cuernos is a separate viewpoint reached from Pudeto. It is not a continuation of the path to Británico.

Can I walk the valley in winter?

Winter regulations apply, with a guide required and temporary closures on the W. When more than 25 cm of snow lies at Italiano or 30 cm at Mirador Francés, the winter rules advise against continuing to Británico. Check the current status with the rangers.

Is this the official website of the park?

No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not the website of the national park, CONAF or the concessionaires in the park, and it is not connected to any tour operator or hotel.
